Learn Basic Math Addition

Addition means joining things together. It can also be defined as Combining collections of objects together into a larger collection is Addition. It is represented by the ‘+’ sign.

We can add the integers using the number line.

Example
I have 5 books in all.

Explanation:

This can be written in different ways:

  •  3 and 2 is 5
  •  3 Plus 2 equals 5
  •  3 + 2 = 5

Here the number or digit 3 and 2 are called Addends or Operands The plus or "+" is called operator. whereas the number 5 is the sum. Sum : When numbers are added together, the answer is called sum. The sum tells how many there are in all. same way
7 + 3 = 10
Addends: 7, 3
Sum: 10

Simple Examples

 10

Explanation:

5 + 5
Take 5 and then add 5 to it.
= 10

 14

Explanation:

8 + 6
We will count 6 after 8. So we will get 14.
8 + 6 = 14

 466

Explanation:

255 + 211
Arrange vertically as shown in the table
5 U + 1 U= 6 U
5 T + 1 T = 6 T
2 H + 2 H = 4 H
255 + 211 = 466

Simple Addition

 13

Explanation:

Lisa had 6 pencils.
She bought 7 pencils.
So that,7 added to 6.
Count 6 after 7
7 + 6 = 13

Addition: Word Problems

 14

Explanation:

Matt had 5 marbles. Elizabeth gave him more 9 marbles. So that, 9 added to 5.
5 + 9
Count 9 after 5
9 + 5 = 14

Library have Total 380 books in all.

Explanation:

Arrange vertically as shown in the table
0 U + 0 U= 0U
5T + 3T = 8T
1H + 2H = 3H
100 + 50 + 230 = 380

Advance Addition

There are Total 590 children in the school.

Explanation:

To find total children in the school we have to add the numbers of boys and girls.

340 + 250
Arrange vertically as shown in the table
0U + 0U= 0U
4T + 5T = 9T
3H + 2H = 5H
340 + 250= 590

Advance Addition

Addition with carrying over

Simple Examples

 34

Explanation:

Arrange vertically as shown in the table
5U + 9U = 14U
14U = 1T 4U
We carry over 1T to the next column.
2T + 1T = 3T
25+9= 34

Simple Addition with carry over

 965

Explanation:

Arrange vertically as shown in the table

9U + 6U = 15U
15U = 1T 5U
We carry over 1T to the next column.
9T + 6T + 1T = 16T
16T = 1H 6T
We carry over 1H to the next column.
5H + 3H + 1H = 9H
599 + 366 = 965

Simple addition with carrying over

Addition : Word Problems

 301

Explanation:

To find total score for the two innings we have to add runs made in both innings.

216 + 85
Arrange vertically as shown in the table
6U + 5U = 11U
11U = 1T 1U
We carry over 1T to the next column.
1T + 8T + 1T = 10T
10T = 1H 0T
We carry over 1H to the next column.
2H + 1H = 3H
216 + 85 = 301

Advance Addition with carrying over

The total cost of these articles Rs 12,800.

Explanation:

To find the total cost of these articles we have to add the cost of these articles.
7800 + 5000
Arrange vertically as shown in the table
0U + 0U = 0U
0T + 0T = 0T
8H + 0H = 8H
7TH + 5TH = 12 TH
7800 + 5000 = 12800

Properties of Addition

Commutativity

If we reverse the terms in a sum left-to-right, and the result is the same as the last one.It is called commutativity of addition.

So that, if a and b are any two numbers, then a + b = b + a

Let us say 4 stars and 3 stars

  •  4 stars and 3 stars = 4 + 3 = 7
  •  It is same as 3 stars and 4 stars = 3 + 4 = 7
  •  So that, 4 + 3 = 3 + 4 = 7
Example:
 8 + 7

Explanation:

Let us count with 8 red blocks and 7 green blocks.
8 red blocks + 7 green blocks = 15 blocks
Let us count with 7 red blocks and 8 green blocks.
7 red blocks + 8 green blocks = 15 blocks
So that, 8 red blocks + 7 green blocks = 7 red blocks+ 8 green blocks = 15 blocks
Hence, 8+7=7+8

Associativity

For any three numbers a, b, and c, (a + b) + c = a + (b + c).

If we say, (1 + 3) + 4=?

  •  (1 + 3) + 4 = 4 + 4 = 8
  •  Now 8 = 1 + 7 = 1 + (3 + 4)
  •  so that, (1 + 3) + 4= 1 + (3 + 4)
Example:
 (8 + 7) + 2

Explanation:

Let us count with 8 red blocks and 7 green blocks. And 2 blue blocks.
(8 red blocks + 7 green blocks) + 2 blue blocks = 17 blocks

Now 8 + (7 + 2)
Let us count with 8 red blocks. And 7 green blocks and 2 blue blocks.
(8 red blocks) + (7 green blocks + 2 blue blocks) = 17 blocks

So that, (8 red blocks + 7 green blocks) + 2 blue blocks =
(8 red blocks) + (7 green blocks + 2 blue blocks) = 17 blocks
Hence, (8 + 7) + 2 = 8 + (7 + 2)

Associativity Associativity

Additive Identity

When we add zero to any number, the quantity does not change. For any a, a + 0 = 0 + a = a.

Let we say, 5 + 0 = ?

  •  Count 0 after five. 5 + 0 = 5
  •  If we say, 0 + 5. Count 5 after zero. 0+5= 5
  •  So that, 5 + 0 = 0 + 5 = 5

Fact Family

If we add two numbers any order we get the same answer.

Let us say, 4 + 6 = 10. As well as 6+4=10.
So that, 4, 6 and 10 are the members of the fact family.

Doubles Fact

A doubles fact is one in which the two addends are the same for e.g. 5 + 5 = 10

 Doubles + 1 Facts

A doubles + 1 fact is one in which one addend is only one more than the other addend for e.g. 5 + 6 = 11

Quick Tips

  •  We should always start to add the numbers from unit place of the given number.
  •  Order does not matter when we add too many numbers together.

Think

  •  Complete the series till comes 300. 240, 260,…….
  •  What is the sum of the values of 4s in 844?
  •  What is 8 hundreds and 8 tens together?
  •  When you join 2 or more groups together, do you get more or fewer objects?
  •  What happens to the sum when we change the order of the addends?
  •  Do you have to count to add 0 to any number?
