How to learn Subtraction

Subtraction means taking things away from a group. We can subtract the integers using the number line. Add a positive integer by moving to the right on number line Or when we take away a given number of objects from a given collection of objects is Subtraction.
It is represented by the ‘- ’ sign.
We cannot subtract greater number from smaller number.

Difference : - When number is subtracted from another number, the answer is called difference.

Note:

Example
I have 3 books in hand.

Explanation:

This can be written in different ways:

  •  5 take away 2 is 3
  •  5 - 2 equals 3
  •  5 - 2 = 3

Here the number or digit 5 and 2 are called Operands
The minus or "-" is called operator.
whereas the number 3 is the diference.

Another Example same way, 7 - 3 = 4 operand are 7, 3 and difference is 4.

If there are 5 - 2 chocolates,
Take away two chocolates from five chocolates.
 We will get 5 - 2 = 3 chocolates

Subtraction without borrowing

Simple Examples

 6

Explanation:

8 - 2
8 apples minus 2 apples leave 6 apples.
8 - 2 = 6

 584

Explanation:

Arrange the subtraction vertically.
First subtract 5 units from 9 units.
9U - 5U= 4U
Write 4 in the units place of difference.
Write 8 in the tens place and 5 in the hundreds place.
589 - 5= 584

Simple Substraction

 844

Explanation:

Arrange the subtraction vertically.
First subtract 5 units from 9 units.
9U - 5U = 4U
5 T + 1 T = 6 T
Write 4 in the units place of difference.
Subtract 3 tens from 7 tens.
7T - 3T = 4T
Write 4 in the tens place and 8 in the hundreds place.
879 - 35 = 844

Simple Substraction

Subtract by borrowing

Simple Examples

 249

Explanation:

Arrange the subtraction vertically.
We cannot subtract 9 units from 8 units.
Hence, we take one of the tens from 5 tens and unite it into units.
We carry over 1T to the next column.
1T = 10U
10U + 8U = 18U
Strike out the 5 in the tens place. Write 4 above it.
Strike out the 8 in the unit place. Write 18 above it.
18U - 9U = 9U
Write 9 in the units place in the difference.
Write 4 in the tens place and 2 in the hundreds place.
258 - 9 = 249

Substraction with Borrowing

 289

Explanation:

Arrange the subtraction vertically.
We cannot subtract 7 units from 6 units.
Hence, we take one of the tens from 8 tens and unite it into units.
1T = 10U
10U + 6U = 16U
Strike out the 8 in the tens place. Write 7 above it.
Strike out the 6 in the unit place. Write 16 above it.
16U - 7U = 9U
Write 9 in the units place in the difference.
We cannot subtract 9 tens from 7 tens.
Hence, we take one of the hundreds from 7 hundreds and unite it into tens.
1H = 10T
10T + 7T = 17T
Strike out the 7 in the hundreds place. Write 6 above it.
Strike out the 7 in the tens place. Write 17 above it.
17T - 9T = 8T
Write 8 in the tens place in the difference.
Subtract 4H from 6H.
6H - 4H = 2H
Write 2 in the hundreds place.
786- 497= 289

Subtraction : Word Problems

Sophia got 900 marks in the final exam. Lisa got 736 marks in the final exam. How many more marks did Sophia get than Lisa?
 164

Explanation :

Sophia got 164 more marks than Lisa.
To find How many more marks did Sophia get than Lisa subtract
smaller number from greater number.
Find 900 - 736
Arrange the subtraction vertically.
We cannot subtract 6 units from 0 units. And cannot subtract 3 tens from 0 tens.
Hence, we take one of the hundreds from 9 hundreds and unite it into tens. And we take one of the tens from 10 tens and unite it into units.
1H = 10T
10T + 0T = 10T
1T = 10U
10U + 0U = 10U
Strike out the 9 in the hundreds place. Write 8 above it.
Strike out the 0 in the tens place. Write 10 above it.
Strike out the 10 in the tens place. Write 9 above it.
Strike out the 0 in the unit place. Write 10 above it.
10U - 6U = 4U
Write 4 in the units place in the difference.
9T - 3T = 6T
Write 6 in the tens place in the difference.
Subtract 7H from 8H.
8H - 7H = 1H
Write 1 in the hundreds place.
900 - 736= 164
Sophia got 164 more marks than Lisa.

Fact family subtraction

A number fact that is made of three numbers called fact family.

If we say 7-4
  •  7 - 4 = 3
  •  We can also write as 7-3=4 and 3+4=7
  •  So that 3,4 and 7 are called the members of fact family.
Example:

Explanation:

If we arrange these numbers in ascending order: 6<9<15
Now we will say 6+9 it is 15. 6+9=15
Now if we subtract any smaller number 6 or 9 from the greater number 15.
15 - 9 = 6 and 15 - 6 = 9
Hence we will get the alternate number from 6 or 9.
Hence, it is proved that 6, 9 and 15 make fact family.

Subtraction with Zero

If we subtract 0 from the number the result will be as it is i.e same number.

Let us say a girl has five flowers. She gives no flowers to anyone.
 A girl has 5 flowers.
We take away 0 from 5 flowers.
So that the number of flowers with her now is same as before.
So that 5 - 0 = 5

Note:

We cannot take away any number from 0.

 Points to Remember

Quick Tips

  •  We should always start to subtract the numbers from unit place of the given number.
  •  To subtract the bigger number from smaller number we have to borrow 10 from next unit.

Think

  •  If you spent Rs.50 from Rs.600 how many will remain with you?
  •  What is the subtraction fact family for 35 - 10 = 25
  •  What is the difference between 888 and 199?
  •  When you subtract, do you get more or fewer objects than the number of object you started with?
  •  What happens to the result when we change the order of the operands?
  •  Do you have to count to subtract 0 to any number?
